The Wroxham Railway Heritage Trust is a registered charity (No. 1093170) which brings under one umbrella two fantastic railway heritage assets in the Wroxham area:
Barton House Railway – a garden miniature railway, run on traditional railway practices, which is open to the public;
Wroxham Signalbox – an original, restored signalbox, also open for visitors, in its original setting next to a working railway line.
Our aim is to educate the public about railway history, with a special focus on traditional signalling and railway safety. We do this by preserving the historic Wroxham Signalbox and running Barton House Railway to provide both an educational and enjoyable experience for visitors of all ages.
Barton House Railway
Barton House Railway was founded by Paul Bower who built the original track (Mid-Land Railway) and restored the 1900s steam loco No. 251 that belonged to his grandfather. In 1963 Peter Bower was instrumental in opening the BHR to the public. Over the decades, BHR has expanded to include two separate railways: the 3.5-inch gauge Midland Railway and the 7.25-inch gauge Riverside Railway. The site also features a fully operational signal box, originally from Honing railway station, which provides visitors with a rare insight into traditional railway signalling.
Wroxham Signalbox
Wroxham Signalbox is a lovingly restored piece of railway heritage located beside the Bittern Line in Wroxham, Norfolk. Operated entirely by volunteers, this unique preserved signalbox offers a rare glimpse into the fascinating world of traditional railway signalling.
Explore the interior of a real working signalbox, complete with the original lever frame and mechanical signalling system. Learn how trains were safely managed before the digital age, try pulling a few levers yourself, and speak to our volunteers who are always happy to explain the equipment and tell a story or two.
